Fountain pen
The nib can be made of:
- solid 18 Kt. gold (750‰): in the Limited Editions and Productions and Jewel Collection
- solid 14 Kt. gold (585‰): in the top and high ranges (88, Optima, Talentum, Ipsilon De Luxe).
This type of nib guarantees the right degree of flexibility and best ink flow - steel for the other lines (TU, Style, Ipsilon, Magellano). The ink feed on the nib is made of ebonite, the best material for this purpose. All nibs are manufactured in Aurora at its factory and involve 17 work processes.
Some plus of Aurora fountain pens:
Top and high range pens feature Aurora’s patented hidden reservoir system: when the ink runs out a simple mechanism can be operated to keep on writing for two more pages. With the piston-refill mechanism, a feature of high range fountain pens, the reservoir is filled directly via the nib. This method requires more manual skill and is particularly appreciated by writing enthusiasts.
Roller
Roller pens are a fairly recent invention. The first were made in Japan, between the 1960s and 1970s, though they never became popular in their country of origin. They did, however, become very popular in America and, more recently, in Europe too, where their appeal reflects a particular lifestyle. In the United States, where practical, busy lifestyles are the norm, the roller pen was an immediate success for its ultra-smooth flow, similar to that of a fountain pen (both use water-based ink), but more practical.Roller pens comprise: Cap, Barrel, Grip and Refill. One distinctive feature that immediately makes it possible to distinguish a roller pen from a ballpoint pen is the cap. Like on the fountain pen, the cap on the roller pen always covers the refill point (to prevent the tip from drying out). Ballpoint pens have the cap on the top, and this is turned or clicked to make the tip of the refill appear. Roller pens use waterbased ink, for a smoother flow and can write at any angle.
Ballpoint pen
The ballpoint pen was invented by the Hungarian Lazlo Biro, in the 1940s.While observing the way a bowl rolled during a bowling match, he came up with the idea of making a ball rotate at the tip of the pen so that, as the pen moved on the page, it would release the right amount of ink, for a smooth, fluid writing experience. High range pens feature the twist mechanism while the click system is used for the mid-to-low ranges. Ballpoint pens use oil-based ink, which is thicker and dries more quickly. Refills last an average of 6 months and can write up to 12-13 Km.
